Tamilong is prescribed for treating metastatic breast cancer, addressing breast cancer in certain patients post-surgery and radiation therapy, and lowering the risk of breast cancer in those at high risk. It functions by hindering the growth of breast cancer by interfering with estrogen's effects on breast tissue. Use Tamilong only for the indicated conditions if it has been prescribed by a healthcare professional. Additionally, Tamilong can help trigger ovulation in women trying to conceive.
Tamilong is a non-steroidal anti-estrogen that competitively blocks estrogen receptors in target organs and their tumors. Although its mechanism is not fully understood, it is known that Tamilong forms a complex with the receptor and cofactor, which subsequently migrates to the cell nucleus to prevent cell hypertrophy driven by estrogen regulation. The effects of the drug can persist for several weeks after a single dose.
This medication can induce ovulation in women and stimulate the production of gonadotropic hormones from the pituitary gland. In men with oligospermia, it raises the levels of luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, testosterone, and estrogen in the serum. Tamilong is utilized for treating breast cancer in both women and men (especially after castration), and it is also effective when cancer has spread to other body parts, as well as in cases of kidney cancer, melanomas, sarcomas of soft tissues with estrogen receptors, and ovarian cancer.
Take Tamilong exactly as prescribed by your physician since the dosage varies based on your condition. A long-term treatment of about 2 years is generally recommended. Consume Tamilong with food and a large glass of water, either as a single dose or split it into two doses (morning and evening), and avoid chewing or crushing the tablets.
Tamilong may elevate the risk of developing endometrial cancer. Patients undergoing treatment with Tamilong should be monitored for any unusual vaginal bleeding, alterations in menstrual cycles, changes in vaginal discharge, or pelvic pain/pressure.
Tamilong is contraindicated for individuals with hypersensitivity to the drug, as well as for women undergoing coumarin-type anticoagulant therapy or those with a history of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, and for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Caution is advised for patients with eye disorders (including cataracts), hyperlipidemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, hypercalcemia, severe thrombophlebitis, or thromboembolism (including a past history).
Potential side effects associated with Tamilong include hot flashes, nausea, vomiting, weight gain, and abnormal menstrual cycles.
Tamilong may induce irregularities in liver and blood tests; hence, regular monitoring for side effects is essential. If symptoms such as jaundice or bleeding occur, patients should seek immediate medical attention.
